Cat Training Tips and Tricks
As a pet owner, no one knows better than you the importance of helping your cat grow up properly so they can enjoy a happy, healthy life. But pets don't come with an instruction manual - so we thought we'd share some of the PURINA ONE expert's secrets! We've included some handy hints for owners of kittens.
Try a little tenderness
It's not hard to be loving and gentle to your kitten and that's a good thing - because the way you react to them will affect their habits for life. The behaviour of kittens is based largely on instinct, so providing kind care is the key. If you ever catch your feline acting up, simply clap your hands and say "NO". This is usually enough to stop them.
Avoid Catfights
Don't ever hit your kitten or squirt them with water. While you may be doing it out of love, it can damage the special bond you have with them and even cause your kitten to fear you on sight.
Toilet training for feline toddlers
Most kittens naturally feel the urge to dig in their litter box filler as early as four weeks. If you interfere with your kitten while they're in the litter box, they may develop an aversion to using the box. Here's some tips:
- Place the box in a quiet location that your kitten can access at all times
- Always keep the box clean, remove soiled litter and change the litter at least once a week
- Watch your kitten carefully, especially after they've woken up or eaten, and place them in their box if they shows signs of needing to use it
Finally, always praise your kitten lavishly to reinforce the fact that they've been good!
Taming the night animal
Cats are nocturnal animals, so it's only natural that your kitten may want to play with you at night. You can help avoid this by feeding them the last meal of the day early and by playing with your kitten in the early evening to use up some of their excess energy. But don't play with your kitten if they wake you up. This only rewards such behaviour - and leaves you exhausted!
Meow!
If your kitten is lonely, anxious or bored, they may "talk" to you by meowing to try and get your attention. And there's nothing wrong with giving your kitten the love they're craving. But do be aware of going overboard and encourage your feline friend too much as they may get into the habit of meowing loudly while you're away - something your neighbours may not appreciate!
When cats nip
When you tickle your kitten's stomach and allow them to wrestle with your fingers, they'll probably respond by nipping and scratching at your hand. It's important never to encourage your kitten to play aggressively, so when they do this, don't pull your hand away. Do this by gently pushing towards your kitten, because if you pull away they'll hang on even more tightly.
Then give your four-legged friend a toy instead of your hand and leave them alone for a few minutes. When they have calmed down, try playing with them again. If they continue to grab your hand, say "NO" in a stern voice - your little feline will soon get the idea. After telling the cat NO just stand up and walk away give the kitten a time out.
The cat that got the cream
These simple tips should be a big help when it come to training your kitten. Before you know it you'll have a fully grown feline friend with the perfect level of maturity and behaviour - so be sure to enjoy that cute period when they are still finding their way!
